Windows or Linux Hosting? Does it matter?

There is a lot of conflicting information regarding which hosting environment is better — Windows or Linux?

Does it really matter?

The truth of the matter is that both are perfectly suitable hosting options, and for all practical purposes you won’t (normally) notice any difference.

Is your site being developed in .ASP? Then you should go with Windows hosting, since this is a Microsoft technology.

Your site being developed in PHP/MySQL? Then you should go with Linux as these were originally developed for use on a unix type OS.

Also, please note that it doesn’t matter what type of computer you use at home. The only real consideration is what type of technology your site is being developed in.

For the record, Linux is almost unheard of at home, but is by far the most popular option for web hosting. It’s secure, fast, and reliable. We normally steer our client towards open source solutions like Linux and PHP, because they work well and you will be in very very good company.

Here’s a  brief article from a few years ago that discusses why Linux is so darn popular for web hosting.
